Archetypal Criticism

 Hello!

In this blog I am going to discuss archetypal criticism. I am Nidhi Jethava and a student of MKBU English Department. One of the interesting things about our department is we have blog tasking after completing units. So in our criticism paper we have one topic ‘ Archetypal Criticism’ And I am going to discuss some of the questions by Dilip Barad sir.

Q.1 What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?

Answer :-

Archetypal literary criticism is a type of analytical theory that interprets a text by focusing on recurring myths and archetypes (from the Greek archē, "beginning", and typos, "imprint") in the narrative, symbols, images, and character types in literary works.

Archetype is a term of narrative design, symbol, character, dream, collective images, myths, ritual and universal thing in literature. 'Archetype of criticism' means recurrent narrative design and it may that art into images and patterns of one another character and theme type in literature. The Archetypal critic tries to find this pattern, symbol and myth in present literary work.

Q.2 What is Frye trying to prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to Literature'?

Answer :-

In his essay Northrop Frye wants to prove that criticism is connected with nature. And he also give an cycle of nature .

Northrop Frye very beautifully describes the cycle of nature. Let’s understand them by examples.

A. Spring ( Comedy )

Here Fry connected  Spring with comedy because Spring and comedy both are symbols of something new, birth, development, revival and resurrection and also symbolize dark to light, dry to greenness...etc.

B. Summer ( Romance )

Here he talked about the season of England not Indian. So Summer denotes romance because generally we can see people getting married in summer time. Other things are the culmination of both these terms. All are symbolize romance through Summer season

C. Autumn ( Tragedy )

Autumn denotes tragedy and It is a symbol of dying life. We can see in autumn all leaves of trees have fallen down and also trees became lifeless. Similarly the hero fell down and the protagonist became a tragic hero.

D. Winter ( Irony & Satire )

Winter is the season of darkness. We can see that the winter season is very cold and days are also shorter and nights are longer. Satire reflects the darkness of literature, It is disillusioned and mocking from literature.

Q. 3 Share your views of Criticism as an organised body of knowledge. Mention relation of literature with history and philosophy.

Answer :-

Archetype criticism is based on philosophy and History of people. As it has been said that literature includes history as well as philosophy to convey its meaning so it displays events and ideas. History and philosophy are two important pillars of literature. History gives events and philosophy gives ideas and writers combine both and create work of literature. Thus both are important to literature. We are not studying history or philosophy but talking only about their help to understand literature.

Q.4 Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave Digger's scene.

Answer:-

Inductive method means something leading from specific to general. Here we take example of physics to better understanding of this method that when Physics' teacher teach students first different parts of body like Kidney, heart, eyes, brain, etc. Then teach whole body parts that's called the inductive method. So Hamlet's Grave digging scene is the best example of an inductive method. As it demonstrates the philosophy of life and death which was revealed by grave diggers. That all Human beings King, Emperor, Sultan are mortal so everyone should die.

Q. 5 Briefly explain deductive methods with reference to an analogy to Music, Painting, rhythm and pattern. Give examples of the outcome of deductive methods.

Answer :-

Deductive means from general to specific. Some are art like music moves in time and some like paintings moves in space. Music has rhythm which is temporal and painting has pattern which is spatial. But all assets may be conceived both temporally and spatially. Literature seems in between music and painting. The rhythm of literature is narration and pattern is the meaning.

Q. 6 Refer to the Indian seasonal grid (below). If you can, please read a small Gujarati or Hindi or English poem from the archetypal approach and apply Indian seasonal grid in the interpretation.
