Frame Study : MODERN TIMES

  Hello friends,

I am Nidhi Jethava and today I am going to discuss more important and interesting term #FRAME#STUDY.

This Frame studies is the part of our further studies. Before my masters I had no idea what does frame study mean ?  But when I came to know,  I think it's a very interesting term because we all love to watch movies and many series. So, literature provides us scope to describe and discuss our understanding. In day to day life people love to watch movies and web series and so many interesting visual literature. By using some special background and effects directors want to describe some particular ideas, philosophy, situation, suffering , love, some kind of thing which is known as ‘ DHVANI’ in Indian Poetics.

In this blog we are going to frame study of films by Charlie Chaplin one is ‘ Modern Times'

First frame describes the title of the movie and contemporary society. Clock reflects so many different means of time. In ancient times there's no clocks and people used to work on natural phenomena. This Clock reflects the modern and industrial time. How time was changed and industrial development.

This image is the opening scene of the movie. This  is concerned with the theme dehumanization. .In modern times ,  the extra excess of  Industrialisation caused the de-humanization of human kind. They are symbolized as sheep. It means anyone can drive them in anyway. It means rich people over power poor people.

This frame somewhere conected with the novel of George Orwell, 1984 and especially that famous dialogue ‘ BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU’. on other side it also mentioned the development of CCTV cameras. Machines are connected with power and machines are seen  huge and dangerous. It seems machine over power human.

This reflects the table manners of that era  people. This remembers THE NUN of Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’. If her character was in the 20th century she has regrets because her whole life she spent in table manners. But something is different people become made behind the development of machinery. The  most important thing is that for any kind of experiment of new innovation, poor people become a victim.

Industrialization brought poverty among the middle class. People who are rich become richer and those who are poor become poorer. The girl is hungry and she wants to eat but the glass is the obstacle for her. That glass symbolized  one kind of non acceptance of poor people. She is not able to buy food. She has no money, footwear in fact not good clothes. That Glass reflect the social discrimination.

Concept of Victorian House. What kinds of furnishing house had ? but this house is the dream house of the character.

Above hut is described as paradise. But first we have to know what is meant by Paradise? According to Christianity Paradise means ‘ the perfect place where some people think that good people go after they die’. So, how can one hut become a paradise ?  It describes the poor people’s satisfaction. It reflects that who has no shelter for them one hut seems paradise.

Machine is running but humans are stopped. Machines are ready to do work. Two figures from different classe stand here, One from the working class and another from aristocratic class. A person who is from the working class is thinking now how he feeds himself ? while rich person thinks about his machinery. We can see that machines have no feelings and emotions while human beings are sensitive and emotional.

This image reflects the great personality of Charlie Chaplin. On the surface , we can interpret that he is trying to impress some girl. But when we put a light of connotational meaning we come to know that it is his great personality. He wants to say something different, he wants to criticize something. He became a worldwide icon through his screen persona. He does not speak but his gestures suggest a lot.

Thank you.....
