In this blog I am going to gave some information about the term POST-TRUTH. So let's gain the knowledge of this particular term.
It is necessary first to understand the meaning o the word Post-truth
POST-TRUTH
Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.
Definition of Post-truth
According to Collins dictionary
"A post-truth situation is one in which people are less influenced by factual information than by their emotions or by beliefs they already hold."
Post-truth is a philosophical and political concept for "the disappearance of shared objective standards for truth"[1] and the "circuitous slippage between facts or alt-facts, knowledge, opinion, belief, and truth".[2] Post-truth discourse is often contrasted with the forms taken by scientific methods and inquiry.[3] The term garnered widespread popularity, in the form of "post-truth politics", in the period around the 2016 United States presidential election and the Brexit referendum. It was named Word of the Year in 2016 by the Oxford Dictionary where it is defined as "Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief"
Post truth frequency :
post-truth :
- The truth is no longer is reliable known or figured out ( due to conflicting sources and the sheer amount of nonsense in the world for example).
Debates are often about which " facts" are actually true instead of what they means or how to put them together.
- Post-truth politics : Voter fraud : Conservatives and Liberals don't debate about how to solve or prevent it, but whether or not it even in the first place.
- Post truth is where public opinion is shared more-so SUBJECTIVE opinion and emotion rather than OBJECTIVE facts. It appeals to EMOTION and PERSONAL BELIEF.
" post-truth" named 2016 word 0f the year Oxford Dictionaries
- Objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeal to emotional belief.
- It is to cherry -pick data and come to whatever conclusion you desire.
- We are living in a post-truth age.... We make up our own subjective reality per some commentators.
- " I wouldn't be surprised if POST-TRUTH becomes one of THE DEFININF WORDS OF TIME," said Grathwohl, the oxford Dictionaries president.
WHAT TO TRUST IN A POST TRUTH WORLD
- We accept a story uncritically if it confirms what we'd like to be true.
- We reject any any story that contradicts it
- We cherry pick only the data that supports our biased worldview
- Checking the facts is not enough
1. Observe- assume the accurately reported
2. Interpret- other ways exits that could as well be sound to explain
3. Apply - applications may occur that violate the laws of logic - its human nature
COMMEN ERRORS INVOLVING CORRELATION
1. Causation :
It is wrong to conclude that correlation implies causality. As a city grows
a) the number of places of worship rise
b) the number of bars rise
It would be wrong to conclude the places of worship drive people to drink. Or visa verse more drinking eventually cause people to seek a remedy by attending a place of worship.
Know that correlation does not imply causality. We have a lurking variable - general population growth
2. Averages :
Averages suppress individual variation and may inflate the correlation coefficient.
3. Linearity :
There may be some relationship between x and y even there is no linear correlation. Accidently they just happen in a linear fashion.
POST-TRUTH SEEN IN
1. History of ideas :
- Nietzsche's perspectivism or relativism.
- It depends from where you come from your demographic age, ethnicity -truth is ultimately really fiction. Subjectivity rules. Everything is relative.
- Knowledge is power and ultimate the will and the power to dominate is the truth.
" A new and magical understanding of the world is on the rise, one based on will rather than truth. There is no truth, in either the scientific or the moral sense."
- ADOLF HITALAR
2. Social Science :
- Everything is socially constructed. The majority opinion states What is true .
Word, words, there are nothing but words formed and shaped by culture and time. We can deconstruct definition and meaning.
- Why must there be a sole interpretation and application to everything ?
- Why do you dogmatically insist things must be coherent ?
Let us have White math, Hispanic math, Asian math, and Black math taught as separate subjective realities.
3. Media
- If we see visually and hear audibly or in print it carries the weight of being true.
- John Kennedy's Dallas speech never took place. It was a composite of various speeches pasted together.
- The media can photoshop any picture. It can blend two unrelated audiovisual into one. It does not matter if it is accurate or true.
4. Danger - Lost of Freedom
- Consequences to the loss of the truth
- We lose the ability to trust
- We are easily deceive and adopted post truth thinking our self. Justice is lost. Legally win at all costs
- Freedom needs the absence of domination by others, such as the politics elite, commercialism, etc. Who give us group think
- Positive freedom means THE ABILITY TO BE- unrestricted to ascend achieve one's purpose in life due to one's effort and natural abilities
POST-TRUTH VS POST-DATA :-
- The biggest problem is not that we live in a post-truth world; it's that we live in a post-data world. We prefer a single story to tons of data.
- A single story is meaningless and misleading unless it's backed up by large-scale data. Even large-scale data might not be enough. It could still be consistent with rival theories. Remember church and bars examples.
HOW TO GUARD AGAINST CONFIRMATION BIAS MOVIND FROM A POST-TRUTH TO PRO-TRUTH WORLDS :-
1. Actively seek other view points:
Read and listen to people you flagrantly disagree with. Ninety percent of what they say may be wrong, in your view. The more important the subject you need them when they get it right.
2. Expertise.
It is found on evidence. Evidence forces you to prove it. Evidence prevents those who yell the loudest from imposing their own view without proof.
3. Examine the credentials of the expert :
Are they truly experts in the matter, or do they have a vested interest ?
4. Real-world experience - is critical
5. Facts must be established :
Only with evidence can we move from a post-truth world to a pro-truth world
6. Practice: of good statistical analysis
CONCLUSION :
To summing up we can say that we all live in the post-truth era. Everyday we have received so many kind of information, news, videos, and lots of things and we emotionally concerned with that particular think. Now a day it is necessary to check and identify whatever information we have received from anywhere.
